Only at the end of first period BC Khimki started to play its best basketball and cut the lead. After the first attack of Wilkinson in the second period the Moscow Region club took the lead. Neither team was able to take control of the contest in the second period, nor did a late basket by Dowdell, which gave Nancy a 41-43 advantage at the break. Greer's three-point play made it a 46-50 game. That's when McCarty stepped up, scoring 11 points, including two long bombs, in an 18-3 run which gave Khimki a 64-53 advantage. The lead was 68-58 going into the fourth. The French tried to close in the fourth quarter, but the combination of McCarty and Ponkrashov was too much.
Kestutis Kemzura, the BC Khimki head coach:
— I am very happy that we won the first match, it is very important. And I pleased besides that we beat the strong team, the leader of French Championship. We started the match awry; we played bad in the defense. But we braced ourselves. Today all guys tried to show their best, but we feel the absence of Lampe on the court. I want to mark today Anton Ponkrashov, he acted well in the attack and he neutralized one of the Nancy’s leaders – Greer. And we can emphasize the performance of McCarty and Veremeenko.
