On Thursday, BC Khimki’s directors accepted the resignation of the team’s Head Coach Sergey Elevich. The reason stated was the unsatisfactory ranking of the team in the Russian Championship, the ULEB Cup, and the Russian Cup.
President of the club and Minister of Property Relations for the Moscow Region, Alexei BODUNKOV, explained:
— Our team performed very well last season, and coming up on the tournament finals, took on substantial force. However, during the current season, the club’s game and their results do not answer to the high task assigned them during the preseason, not only for the Russian Championship, but also for the Euro Cup and Russian Cup. Of the 21 games Khimki has played so far, they have suffered 10 defeats. They have even lost in games against opponents lower down in the tournament standings.
— Undoubtedly Sergey Elevich has been with Khimki since its founding, and I sincerely recognize that this has been a very difficult decision to take. Nonetheless, the situation called for this measure. Up until the end of the season Sergey Nikolaevich is on vacations, and it's possible he will reincorporate himself into the structure of the club. I am sure our mutual cooperation will result in concrete measures for the good of the whole team, the city, and the Moscow Region. For now, a specialist will take over for the direction of the team and help prepare them for the upcoming important games, as acting head coach.
— I would like to mention that the team’s activities, asked of them, has not been called off by anyone.
