On Wednesday, BC Khimki will face off in a second match in history against a rookie and outsider, the Toliatti Club. Last year’s silver medalists understand that all this does not guarantee victory against an opponent. The game will take place in the Samara MTL-Arena, at 18:00 Moscow time. During the three seasons this team has been in the Elite Division, it faced off with the second team in the “yellow-blue pyramid.”

Meet the Opponent

The Standard team is the youngest of the A Division teams. Its current coach, Vladimir Trunov, initiated the professional basketball in Toliatti, when in 2001 he founded the basketball club, taking the city as namesake. Prior to that, only amateur teams played in Toliatti. Trunov, however, soon went his own way, and two years later a second club was founded, Standart, which had some serious tasks ahead of them from the very start.

The first season was experimental, and to improve the team’s strength they played in the First League, paving the way to play at a superior level.

The task for the 2003/04 season of winning the gold in the First League was accomplished. Standart, leaped up two echelons, appearing in the Super League B. In their first season they took sixth place, and played in the eighth finals of the National Cup, losing against CSKA.

The following year their goal was to conquer the gold. From the first until the final games, the fortified Standart was the leader in the tournament, and with only a few games to the finals, was welcomed into the A Division. With the help of the regional government, the club, from practically zero, began to prepare for its debut in the Elite Division. Sergey Bazarevich was invited to head up the team as coach, but left shortly afterward, and Vladimir Trunov took up where he had left off, anew.
