Aleksey Vadeev: We are waiting for championship’s start17 july 2008
Next Friday National team of Russia U18, the silver medalist of 2nd International Alexander Petrenko Pro Memoria tournament will play its first match on European Championship in Greece against Ukraine. The head coach of our team Aleksey Vadeev told us about the past tournament and future plans.
— In Moscow Region it is very hot, but we shouldn’t complain about it. The European Championship will pass in Amaliada and Pirgos, the sunniest town in Greece. Of course, in each basketball center there are air-conditioners, but it is impossible to keep doors closed all the time. And now we pass through ‘acclimatization”.
Are you satisfied with the Petrenko’s tournament results?
— For me this tournament is more than only basketball. First of all, it is the memory of Sasha Petrenko. And I want participate in it each year. I will take part in veterans match next year.
23rd of July we will go to Greece two days before Championship for getting accustomed to background.
The 1st Petrenko tournament Russia’s team won…
— This year the level of opponents was higher. And Greek team is one of the European Championship favorite. Last winter this team won non-official world championship in Mannheim, they beat USA, Argentina, Spain…We wanted and I am sure we could win on Petrenko tournament, but didn’t cope with load of responsibility.
What are your hopes with the Championship of Europe?
— It’s hard to say. In youth teams the result is determined by team chemistry, not by some players-stars. The outstanding games and misfortunes can take turns. In many respects, the result of our performance will depend on coach’s work.
