Unicaja announced on Tuesday that Chus Mateo, 42, will be the one taking the reins at the team until the end of the season after the waiving of Aito Garcia Reneses.
Mateo was an assistant coach at Fuenlabrada of the Spanish League and was also the assistant of Sergio Scariolo at the Spanish national team. He had been in Unicaja also assisiting Scariolo during the stint of the Italian coach in Malaga. Mateo was formed in the Real Madrid inferior categories and arrived in Malaga in 2004 to help Scariolo, as they had been already together in Real Madrid. They won the 2005 Spanish King's Cup together and also won the 2006 Spanish League. He then moved to CAI Zaragoza of the second division to become a head coach but was waived in the middle of the season. Since then, he has been in Fuenlabrada. Mateo will make his debut at the Unicaja bench in the first Top 16 game to be played Thursday against Caja Laboral in Malaga.
