The active player with the most Turkish Airlines Euroleague titles will play in his hometown for the first time in his pro career with the announcement Friday that Sarunas Jasikevicius has been signed by Zalgiris Kaunas for the upcoming season.
Jasikevicius (1.91 meters, 37 years old) was an All-Euroleague First Team selection in 2004 and 2005, the season in which he also lifted the Final Four MVP trophy. He ranks first among the most accurate free throw shooters in the Euroleague this century, having made 527 of 573 for a rate of 92%. He also ranks fourth all-time in assists (639), sixth in free throws made (527), seventh in three-pointers made (296), ninth in total points (2,209) and 10th in games played (206). But his most important stat is continental titles won — four — which only four players have surpassed in the history of European club competition dating to 1958. Jasikevicius won his first Euroleague crown as starting point guard for FC Barcelona in 2003, then repeated the feat with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in 2004 and 2005. He later came off the bench to help Panathinaikos Athens win the title again in 2009. Last season, he reached the Final Four for the sixth time in his career with FC Barcelona, for whom he averaged 4.9 points and 2 assists in 14 minutes per game. He has played additionally with Euroleague teams Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, Union Olimpija Ljubljana and Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul, as well as NBA teams Indiana and Golden State, during his 14-year pro career. Jasikevicius grew up in Kaunas, but left for high school in the United States and has never been back to play professionally in his hometown.
“I always had a dream of playing for Zalgiris,” Jasikevicius said Friday. “While my career was going on, I almost lost the hope to play for my hometown team, but finally life has put everything in the right places and I am happy to be in Kaunas. My childhood dream has come true.”
