James Augustine: A big, big game coming up! 30  march  2016

In his fourth season with Khimki Moscow Region, center James Augustine helped the team win the Eurocup last season and become a Turkish Airlines Euroleague contender in this one. A well-rounded veteran, Augustine played for Orlando in the NBA before taking his career to Spanish clubs Gran Canaria, Valencia and Murcia. He joined Khimki in 2012 and the team reached the Euroleague Top 16 in his first season. Now, he and Khimki hope to go even further together. In his blog, James tells us what's going on at one of the most exciting teams in continental basketball!
We got a big road win against Zalgiris, and it is time for us to stay focused, because we have another big game coming up on Thursday. We have to be ready to face Olympiacos and win this next game. Zalgiris has a good home atmosphere and it was a tough game for us. We were in control most of the game and that helped us get the win. It is great to play in Kaunas, it is exciting. They have great fun and it is fun to play in places like that. Tyler Honeycutt played really well. He got a lot of rebounds, which is something he can do all the time. Hopefully he can keep that energy going. We needed that win, on the road against a tough team. Hopefully we can come back home and play well here to keep the momentum going.

Olympiacos has a deep, strong frontcourt. It is a constant challenge to compete in this group, so we have to play the best we can. Overall, we need to play defense the way that we have been playing and put together 40 good minutes to get the win. It is exciting to be in this group, because it forces you to be ready every week. It is something we need, to keep playing at this level, and it is very important for us to keep everybody healthy: that is the main key for us. We have to keep our momentum going, even when it is difficult to play two tough games every week in the Euroleague and the VTB League.

We have a new coach, Dusko Ivanovic, and he has been good for us. He is very disciplined and we have been practicing a lot lately, changing a lot of things. I think we have been playing a lot better, with a lot more energy. It is early to tell, but I think it has been good for the team. I played for a lot of different coaches in my career, so adjusting to a new one is not new to me. I have played for every type of coach and it has been an easy adjustment for me: we just have to practice hard and give our best at all times. He knows a lot of stuff and has been to a lot of places, coaching big games. He has worked for a bunch of different teams. He is experienced and knows different teams and different situations. We have been watching a lot of video and when he says something, it is really important. It is great that he is so experienced and that is helping us out a lot.

It is a must-win game for Olympiacos and us. The loser could be out of the playoffs race. I don't think there is extra pressure: it is what it is! Maybe someone else feels that pressure, but we have to win is what it all comes down to. We have to win every game, that has not changed since the beginning of the season. Every team tries to win every game. We put ourselves in this position, so we have to come out, play hard and see what happens. Defense, for us, is the key. Starting from our defense, we have to be able to keep pushing the entire game. We have been falling off later in the games, so we need to keep our momentum the whole game.

I am feeling alright, same as always. We have been having a lot of injuries, so I have to play a little bit more. I am here to help my team and it is something you have to play through. Even with all of our injuries, we have chances to go to the playoffs. We have a good group of guys who have been here for a lot of years, and others who have been around for a couple of years, too. When we have injuries, somebody steps up and comes to play.

This will be our last home game of the Top 16: we will play against Real Madrid on the road after facing Olympiacos. We know we will probably need to win both games to make it to the playoffs. It would be cool to make it, but if we want to do it, we have to take one game at a time. Hopefully, we will win on Thursday, go to Madrid and win that one. We will see what happens after this week. We already beat Madrid in Spain and I think that will make things easier for us. We already played in that atmosphere and beat them twice already this season, even when they beat us at home in the Top 16. We have confidence and it will come down to who plays better that day. Right now, we are only focused on Olympiacos.

I hope to see you, Khimki fans, in the stands on Thursday!
