Khimki Moscow Region named Georgios Bartzokas as its newest head coach for the next two seasons, the club announced Friday.
Bartzokas, 52, takes over from Dusko Ivanovic, who led Khimki the 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals and the VTB United League finals last season, from which it earned a berth in the coming season’s Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Bartzokas arrives from FC Barcelona Lassa, which he guided to a 12-18 record and 11th place in the EuroLeague and a 22-10 record and sixth-place regular season finish in the Spanish League, where it was eliminated by eventual champion Valencia Basket in the quarterfinals. By signing with Khimki, Bartzokas returns to Russia, where he found great success just two seasons ago. As head coach of Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, he took the club to its most successful season ever by reaching the 2016 EuroLeague Final Four in Berlin. This will be the sixth EuroLeague season for Bartzokas, who led Olympiacos Piraeus to the 2013 title after which he was named the Aleksandar Gomelskiy Coach of the Year. His first EuroLeague head coaching job came with Maroussi Athens in the 2009-10 season. Bartzokas, who has also coached Olympia Larissa and Panionios in his native Greece, has a career record of 81-56 in the EuroLeague.
