Just a couple of days after Pablo Prigioni announced he was stepping down as head coach at Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, the club announced his successor, who is none other than Pedro Martinez, who has signed until the end of the current season plus the next one.
Martinez, 56, arrives from Valencia Basket, which with he won the Spanish League last season and also reached two more finals: the Spanish King's Cup and the 7DAYS EuroCup, which the team lost to Unicaja Malaga. Martinez was also named Coach of the Year in the EuroCup. It was Valencia's most successful season to date. Martinez already coached Baskonia during the 2005-06 season, so this will be his second stint on the Vitoria bench. Martinez is also the second active coach with the most games in the Spanish League, just behind Aito Garcia Reneses. With Martinez's addition, Baskonia hopes to revert the disappointing results with which the team has started the season and which led to coach Progioni resigning.
