Alexey Shved of Khimki Moscow Region established a new Turkish Airlines EuroLeague single-season record for points scored when he sank a three-pointer three and a half minutes into his team's Round 29 home game against defending champion Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul on Thursday.
That shot gave Shved 612 points total in his 29th appearance this season, eclipsing the 609 that Keith Langford of UNICS Kazan scored last season in 28 games. The record-breaking score from the top of the key was Khimki's first basket of the game and triggered an 8-0 run in which Shved added a layup and an assist.
Shved is the EuroLeague's runaway scoring leader this season with an average of 21.75 points, which is the competition's highest this century for more than 20 games in a given season. Shved's average is close to being the highest in the competition since the 2003-04 campaign, when Lynn Greer of Idea Slask Wroclaw put up 25.1 points per game over 14 appearances. Shved has scored 16 or more points in all of his previous 28 games this season, a streak that surpassed the late, great Alphonso Ford for consistent excellence. He has scored 20 points or more 20 times this season, including seven consecutive games from Rounds 20 through 26.
Shved's record for total points is added to another that he claimed in Round 25, when he set a new single-season mark for three-pointers made, a figure which was up to 84 entering tonight's game. Shved has the rest of the regular season and a minimum of three games in the playoffs, for which Khimki has qualified, to continue adding to the record.
