Khimki Moscow Region general manager, Pavel Astakhov discusses plans to keep players in shape.
Both the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and VTB United League seasons are temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Khimki Moscow Region players have resumed practices. General manager, Pavel Astakhov talked with RIA Novosti about the developing situation.
“We are building a training schedule based on the dates announced by EuroLeague and VTB,” he said commenting on both leagues suspending action up to April 10, “Our players have started training again. We are trying to make sure that by April 10 everyone is in shape and ready to continue the season.”
Despite players attempting to get back in shape, April 10 is simply the earliest possible date for both EuroLeague and VTB to resume their schedules. Asked about possibly canceling the rest of the VTB campaign, Astakhov mentioned that the current standings can be counted as final rankings but added that health security remains a priority at this time.
“If the season is not completed, current standings can determine the champion,” he noted with Khimki sitting first in the VTB standings with an 18-1 W-L tally up to the season being suspended, “If no champion is declared, how will we determine the EuroLeague participants?. This is a complicated issue. It’s far too early to discuss any possible outcome. Our priority is the health of the players, coaches, our families, and fans.”
