Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius filled its head coaching vacancy with the hiring of Aleksandar Petrovic for the remainder of the season, with an option for an additional season. Petrovic, 54, takes over for Dirk Bauermann, who was dismissed last week. Assistant coaches Dainius Adomaitis and Arvydas Gronskis will remain on Petrovic’s staff. Petrovic was the 2011 Eurocup Coach of the Year with Cedevita Zagreb. He most-recently guided the Bosnian national team at EuroBasket 2013.
Though older brother of the late Hall of Famer Drazan Petrovic, Aleksandar – or Aca – was a great player in his own right. Among his premier playing accomplishments are winning the Euroleague twice with Cibona Zagreb and medaling at the Olympic Games, the World Championships and the European Championships with the Yugoslavian national team. He has also coached Cibona and Zadar in Croatia, Caja San Fernando Seville and Caprabo Lleida in Spain, Anwil Wloclawek in Poland, and Carifac Fabriano and Eurorida Scafati in Italy.
