Some players are media friendly but none like Hristo Nikolov of Union Olimpija Ljubljana, who has taken his basketball devotion to the next level. Three years ago, Nikolov founded his own basketball website, http://www.bball.bg, where tells the world what is going on in Bulgarian basketball. At the same time, he is trying to make Olimpija go deep into the 2014-15 Eurocup. Nikolov will tell us all about Olimpija this season, on and off the court, so be ready to follow his blog right here on Eurocupbasketball.com!
Union Olimpija has been doing well. We have been keeping our concentration in every game. We play in the Eurocup and ABA League, two strong competitions. It is hard to do well in both, and that is why we have to stay mentally strong, to be focused in every game. It is not easy, but I am happy that we are winning in the Eurocup, especially on the road. We already have three wins outside of Ljubljana. We are in the right way and want to stay there!
Like I said in my previous blog, it was really special for me to play against Szolnoki Olaj on the road. It was a good moment: I really appreciate the support and love from their fans. Of course, I am playing for Olimpija now and that's it. We knew it would be a tough game, everybody knew that Szolnoki was not an easy opponent, especially in front of their fans. It was a difficult game, but our concentration was at the highest level and we won the game with a fourth-quarter rally. Luke Rupnik helped us a lot in that game. Like I said before, our young players are doing a great job. The score never goes down when they are in the game. They play with energy and are aggresive on defense and offense. We really appreciate this.
We also beat Zenit St. Petersburg in Ljubljana and VEF Riga on the road. In this kind of situation, you don't have a lot of time to practice and prepare the games — especially if you play away and have to travel — but we are definitely focusing on the things we do well. When the game arrives, we have to execute the right way and of course, be strong on defense. Everything on our team starts from defense. Whatever offense gives us is OK, but defense is the most important thing. Last week, we played against Zadar and VEF Riga on the road, getting 20-point leads at the end of the first quarter in both games. That means that defense and being focused is working well for us.
For a team and any player, it is really important how you start the game. We have been able to enter every game ready to follow our instructions and give everything we have for the two hours we are on the court, playing as a team and helping each other. It is very important how you start the game and the third quarter, too. I am happy that we found our formula for great, strong defense. We are communicating well on defense, which is very important. I hope we can keep doing that way!
We were in Riga but didn't have time to see much. I wish we had more time for such things. On the way back, in the airplane, I was in the last seat and had to wait for everyone else to leave the plane before me. I was talking to the stewardess and telling her that I had been in Moscow four times and never had time to see Red Square. She laughed and said she had been a stewardess for 22 years and had been to India many times, but never had the chance to see the Taj Mahal. For sure, it is a job and we have to stay professional. When you go on a trip, you don't have time to visit anything. We have everything scheduled: lunch, practice, dinner, sleeping, morning practice and the game.
I have time to see Ljubljana, of course, so that is a different story, of course. It is a great city, there is a lot of history here, a lot of old buildings with great architecture. The river runs through the city center and gives you fresh energy, you can feel it! It is really nice, with a lot of tiny streets and small restaurants. I really love it. When the weather is good, we definitely go out and enjoy ourselves.
Since my first blog entry, we signed Klemen Prepelic, a great, young prospect who had played in Olimpija before. He definitely knows the game of basketball. It is a matter of time for him to show and prove what we can do. Anyway, I think people know what he is capable to do. The point here is that with him, we have a deeper roster and it is not about who scores more points or anything like that, but how to help each other to make Olimpija reach its goals. We have to keep this spirit, this chemistry and keep winning. I think he knows and understands that. He is doing great.
We won four games and lost against Khimki by 3 points. We will battle for first place against Besiktas this week. When we played against them the first time, they were definitely not in their best shape. They were missing two players and have a full roster now. They have played 10 games together so Besiktas is stronger and more prepared now than when we meet them in Istanbul. It will be a difficult game but it doesn't make any difference to us. We are trying to be like a machine; we get to the next game and try to give 100%, and then move to the next one. The focus and aggressiveness is the same and the way each game goes, you will see what is going to happen. It is a strong group but I think we are not a bad team. We are improving in every game and showing everyone that we can play good defense and offense. We have great chemistry, you can see that when you look at our bench, the way they support the players who are on the court.
We hope to keep going, with the help of our fans, of course, who have been great all season! Go Olimpija!
