Laboral Kutxa Vitoria bolstered its froncourt by inking center Mirza Begic to a one-month deal, the club announced Wednesday. Begic (2.16 meters, 29 years old) arrives from Union Olimpija Ljubljana, where he averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3.7 blocks in three Eurocup games this season.
He is a veteran of eight Turkish Airlines Euroleague seasons. He played with Olympiacos Piraeus last season, where he averaged 3.6 points, 2 rebounds and 0.8 blocks, coming mostly off the bench, in 12 Euroleague games. Begic has the third-most blocks in the Euroleague (132) since his debut in the 2007-08 season and ranks sixth all-time with the same number. During his career, Begic has also played for Real Madrid in Spain, Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania, Union Olimpija , Geoplin Slovan Ljubljana and Triglav Kranj in Slovenia, Virtus Bologna in Italy, KK Zadar in Croatia and Huy Basket in Belgium. Begic helped Olimpija win consecutive Slovenian league and cup titles in 2008 and 2009, as well as lifting the Baltic League trophy with Zalgiris in 2010. In his three seasons with Real Madrid, he helped the team reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2011 and 2013, and to win the Spanish double crown – league and national cup – in 2012. Begic has been signed to fill in for injured Lamont Hamilton and will be eligible to play at Neptunas Klaipeda.
