In an incredible show of class in the face of elimination, Alexey Shved of Khimki Moscow Region broke two EuroLeague Playoffs records on Friday despite his team getting nipped at the finish by cross-town rival CSKA Moscow, whose 88-89 road win in Game 4 was worth a 3-1 series victory and a return trip to the Final Four in Belgrade.
As he led Khimki back from 17 down to lead in the final minute, Shved broke two records for EuroLeague Playoffs games since 2005. His 36 points total exceeded by 1 the long-standing mark that Terrell McIntyre set with Montepaschi Siena in 2009. And Shved's 8 three-pointers made out of 12 attempts was also 1 better than Dusan Kecman's 7 for Partizan Belgrade in 2010.
Shved had come into Game 4 of the series needing 1 three-pointer to become the first EuroLeague player ever to make 100 in a season, and he went way beyond that to finish with 107. The record from last season had been 78, and it was also broken by Sergio Rodriguez of CSKA, who has made 90 threes before he heads to the Final Four.
Earlier in the season, Shved had already broken the single-season record for total points, surpassing the 609 that Keith Langford scored last season for UNICS Kazan. With his 36 on Friday, Shved left the new single-season mark at 740 points. His season-long average of 21.76 points over 34 games was the EuroLeague’s highest for a player with 20 or more games played since the late, great Alphonso Ford posted 24.75 in the 2001-02 season.
CSKA had its own record from the series, however, as Othello Hunter collected 18 rebounds in the four games, tying the new playoffs record since 2005 that Jan Vesely of Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul had established one night earlier.
