The reigning Eurocup champion will defend its title with a new coach after Valencia Basket announced Thursday that it has parted ways with Velimir Perasovic after more than three seasons together. The announcement came the morning after Valencia lost at home by 87-92 to CSU Asesoft Ploeisti, which had lost its first two Last 32 games by an average of 21.5 points. It was the first road win by a Romanian team over a Spanish opponent in official competition since 1973.
Both teams now have 1-2 records in Group N. Valencia had previously failed to make the Top 16 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, the competition it was playing at the start of the season, having earned its place there thanks to the 2013-14 Eurocup title. Valencia Basket has also announced that assistant coach Carles Duran will step in as head coach, while the club studies the best options to try to achieve the goals set for this season. Perasovic, a three-time Euroleague champion as a player, has spent much of his 12-year coaching career in Spain, with all or parts of seven seasons with Baloncesto Seville, Laboral Kutxa Baskonia, Estudiantes, and since Jan. 26, 2012, Valencia. He has also spent four seasons in his native Croatia with Cibona and one in Turkey with Anadolu Efes Istanbul.
