A day-long working session took place in Barcelona on Tuesday to discuss the future of professional European club competitions.
A selection of 27 elite professional basketball clubs of Europe, including current Euroleague and Eurocup participants, attended meetings called by Euroleague Basketball to update the current status of the implementation of next season’s European club competitions, as well as to discuss their future evolution.
The clubs received a detailed explanation about the 10-year joint venture agreement between Euroleague Basketball and IMG, including the positive short-, mid — and long-term impact on the growth of the competitions, which will build on the progress experienced in the last 15 years to boost European basketball to an optimal and unprecedented position within the sports and entertainment landscape.
Euroleague Basketball executives also shared with the clubs the future vision of a projected evolution of the Euroleague and the Eurocup in upcoming years as an integrated unit within the new IMG/Euroleague Joint Venture in order to continue to build a strong, attractive and unique product for fans, clubs, players and other stakeholders.
The clubs and Euroleague Basketball representatives were able to share their thoughts on a number of issues, including governance, calendars, competitions access and relationships with domestic leagues. The importance of clubs as the foundation of all basketball activity worldwide was confirmed by all attendees, as was the need for clubs to work together for the progress of European basketball as a whole.
Further discussions will take place in coming weeks in order to define concrete actions for the 2016-17 season and beyond.
