Euroleague Basketball extends its deepest condolences to the CSKA Moscow basketball family on the passing of team doctor Roman Abzhelilov on Saturday due to complications caused by COVID-19. He was 44 years old and was survived by his wife and two children.
"Today, our good and always sympathetic friend, colleague, brilliant doctor and excellent family man Roman Abzhelilov has left us," CSKA said in a statement. "His body fought desperately, but failed to cope with the health complications caused by the coronavirus infection.
"The deepest condolences to his family and friends throughout the club, and to all those whom Roman helped to cope with health problems... He was a wonderful person and a universal favorite ... This is a big loss for all of us."
Mr. Abzhelilov had served as CSKA's team doctor since 2014. He had begun his career as a physiotherapist for teams in his native Samara, and later became the team doctor for several clubs before serving the same role with Khimki Moscow Region and the Russian national team. As such, he was part of CSKA's Turkish Airlines EuroLeague title teams in 2016 and 2019. He also was a member of Khimki's staff when it won the 7DAYS EuroCup title in 2012.
