EuroLeague
FC Bayern Munich got back to the winning ways by holding on for a 93-95 road win over Khimki Moscow Region on Tuesday.
Bayern improved to 13-9 on the season, while Khimki dropped to 2-20, suffering its 14th consecutive loss. Bayern built an 11-point lead in the first quarter, but the hosts used long-distance shooting to rally in the second. Bayern was in front for a majority of the second half, but never by double-digit margins again. Khimki did get within 82-83 midway through the fourth quarter, but Bayern stayed a step ahead to the finish. Nick Weiler-Babb had the best game of his rookie EuroLeague season with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. James Gist added 19 points plus 8 rebounds while Jalen Reynolds posted 17 points. Paul Zipser and Wade Baldwin IV added 10 points each in the winning effort. Alexey Shved had a double-double of 32 points and 11 assists for Khimki. Dairis Bertans netted 15 points and Errick McCollum scored 12 for the hosts.
Bayern came out on fire, with Zipser and JaJuan Johnson knocking down corner jumpers while Baldwin and Leon Radosevic each hit a triple. A tip-in-plus-foul from Zipser opened a 4-15 lead. Khimki scored the next 7 points with Evgeny Valiev scoring a layup and Sergey Monia knocking down a triple, but Reynolds scored 7 points before the end of the quarter, including a pair of dunks, to make it 15-26 after 10 minutes. A triple by Bertans sparked a 9-0 Khimki run to start the second quarter. Weiler-Babb added a pair of jumpers for the visitors before Janis Timma's triple kept Khimki within 29-30. Gist strung together 6 points, including a fastbreak dunk, for Bayern that Vyacheslav Zaytsev answered with 5 of his own, including a triple, for Khimki's first lead, 38-37. Timma's acrobatic layup fell before Zipser hit a triple for a 44-44 halftime tie.
Weiler-Babb came back with a triple as Bayern opened 46-53 on Gist's put-back dunk-plus-foul. On the next three trips down the floor, Shved's 2 triples and another by Monia nailed evened it again, 55-55. D.J. Seeley and Weiler-Babb answered from deep as Bayern surged again to a 55-63 lead. Monia and Bertans dialed up threes, too, and after Bayern's Reynolds had back-to-back put-back dunks, Timma's triple cut it to 67-71. Khimki finished the quarter with 8 straight points capped by back-to-back three-point plays from Errick McCollum and Evgeny Voronov for a new lead of 75-73. Weiler-Babb's 5 points to start the fourth quarter restored Bayern's lead. Valiev and Reynolds traded inside baskets before Weiler-Babb and Shved did the same with triples for an 82-83 Bayern edge inside the final 5 minutes. Reynolds, Weiler-Babb and Gist combined to pull down 4 offensive rebounds on five possessions down the stretch, and despite McCollum's three-pointer, Bayern held an 85-91 advantage entering the final minute. Shved's basket-plus-foul got Khimki within 89-91 with 16.7 to go, but Bayern preserved its lead from the free throw line.
Career-best performance
Bayern guard Nick Weiler-Babb had the best game of his rookie season, netting 25 points on 4-for-7 two-point and 4-for-6 three-point shooting, along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists for a PIR 38. Every single one of those marks set or tied his EuroLeague highs.
Big-man duo dominates
James Gist and Jalen Reynolds dominated the paint against Khimki, each having near-perfect shooting nights. Gist finished with 19 points on 8 of 9 two-point shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block. Reynolds had 17 points on 6 of 7 two-point shooting, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Bayern won the rebounding battle 28-42 in part because both Khimki centers, Devin Booker and Jordan Mickey, could not play.
Overcoming stats
Bayern came out on top despite having more turnovers, 14 to Khimki's 8, and despite Khimki hitting 13 triples to Bayern's 8.
Shved breaks the mark
No Khimki player made more than 11 free throws in a single game until tonight when Alexey Shved made 15. Shved set a new club record already in the first half, during which he made 12 of 12 from the foul line, but then did not make another one until the final minute of the game. Shved has become only the sixth EuroLeague player this century to hit at least 15 free throws without a miss.
Next up
Khimki will be in action again on Thursday when it hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in the Round 23 opener, while Bayern stays in Moscow and will visit CSKA Moscow on Friday.
