With eyes on its return to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in the fall, ALBA Berlin has chosen to stay the course on its bench by re-signing head coach Sasa Obradovic for next season, with an option for one more. Obradovic, 45, has been head coach in Berlin for two seasons so far, leading ALBA to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 in the first, where it finished 4-10 as the first German club to ever win a game in that phase.
Last season in the Eurocup, Obradovic took ALBA as far as the quarterfinals, where it lost on points to eventual champion Valencia Basket to finish with a 16-4 overall record. On the domestic side, ALBA lifted the 2013 German Cup under Obradovic and reached the finals of both that tournament and the domestic playoffs last season. Obradovic had previously been with ALBA for three seasons of his long playing career, which began in Crvena Zvezda of his native Serbia and featured stops with Virtus Roma, Buducnost Podgorica and RheinEnergie Cologne. He was a world champion in 1988, European champion in 1995, 1997 and 2001, and Olympic silver medalist in 1996 with the Yugoslav national team. Obradovic has also coached in Cologne, at BC Kiev and BC Donetsk of Ukraine, as well as PGE Turow Zgorzelec of Poland.
"Berlin is a special place for me and my family," Obradovic said in a statement. "I love the club, its fans and the city. We started after the reboot last summer, a project that is still far from finished. We will do everything we can, with continuity, hard work and passion, to develop the team further and repeat the good results of last year."
